Speaking • Outreach

Luther Kissam V is an accomplished poet, creative writer, and mental health advocate. Due to his openness and vulnerability, he is a sought-after speaker at schools, universities, and community events. He actively volunteers his time to champion causes close to his heart, including literacy, mental wellness, and college access. Through his writing, advocacy, and outreach, Luther continues to inspire others to embrace their own resilience and potential.

As early as middle school, Luther began experiencing anxiety, loneliness and thoughts of self-harm. In junior high school, his emotional regulation worsened, greatly affecting his life, his family and his relationships, resulting in multiple hospitalizations. During his junior year of high school, he was ultimately diagnosed with bipolar disorder. His courageous quest to find meaning while learning to live with bipolar disorder inspired Have I Told You About My Superpowers……a book of resilient verse. Little Star Publishing will release this collection as an audiobook for Mental Health Awareness Month this May.

Dr. Kevin Marra MD,  Director of Medical Services at Hopeway Foundation in Charlotte, NC  – “this book of poetry a tumultuous wave of manic highs and depressed lows – yet a message of hope to all who suffer.”

Kathy Izard, Author, Speaker, and Coach – “I believe this book is a gift for anyone trying to understand the complexities of what it feels like to have a brain hijacked by mania and depression. Kissam’s writing is phenomenal — both in the individual poems and the complex weave of poems designed to carry the reader ride along in his search to find mental health balance.”

It is this search for balance and his deep commitment to mental wellness and personal growth that is relatable to all who struggle.
